We arrange asbestos in soil testing where site history or observations indicate that asbestos-containing material may be present in made ground, demolition material or excavated soil. Sampling locations are recorded and laboratory analysis is selected for the question being investigated.

Asbestos in made ground and demolition material

Fragments from roofing, insulation and other demolition materials can be distributed unevenly through fill. Former buildings, demolition history and previous investigations help identify where sampling is most useful, while a stockpile may need a different approach from undisturbed ground.

The sampler records the location, depth and material encountered. Suspect debris needs careful handling to avoid unnecessary fibre release. Laboratory analysis and air measurement, where undertaken, require the appropriate UKAS-accredited laboratory scope; that is distinct from the competence needed to plan and carry out the site investigation.

Interpreting asbestos-in-soil laboratory results

Identification establishes whether asbestos is present in the submitted material; quantification, where required, measures the amount using the specified method. Those results are interpreted with the condition of the material, the proposed work and the ways people could be exposed.

For excavation work, laboratory results need to be read with the sampling plan. Each result should remain traceable to the material and location it represents. Waste classification and a receiving facility’s acceptance decision are separate from the question of whether asbestos was detected in a sample.

Does one negative sample prove the whole site is clear?

No. Asbestos can be unevenly distributed, so the investigation design and sample coverage matter.

Can soil analysis replace air monitoring?

No. They measure different things and answer different exposure questions.

Can I collect a suspect sample without advice?

Sampling should be planned by a competent person to avoid unnecessary disturbance and obtain useful evidence.

Why do sample locations and depths need recording?

Does the test decide how material can be excavated?
