Groundwater contamination source and movement
Repairing a leaking tank or pipe stops the source only if no further release remains; contamination already in the ground can continue to affect groundwater. Monitoring wells are positioned and screened to suit the geology, groundwater levels and suspected direction of movement.
Results from several dates can reveal changes that one sample misses. Seasonal water levels and rainfall can affect the distribution, while dissolved contamination behaves differently from a separate layer of recoverable product.

Treatment, recovery and follow-up monitoring
Treatment is selected for the contaminant and ground conditions. Recovered liquids, spent treatment media and treated water all need appropriate handling, and any discharge of treated water must use an authorised route that meets the applicable conditions.
Follow-up monitoring shows whether concentrations and migration are reducing as intended. It can continue after active treatment to check for rebound from residual contamination and provides the evidence used to judge whether the remediation objectives have been met.

Can one groundwater sample define the whole contamination plume?
No. Extent and behaviour normally require an investigation designed around the source and groundwater conditions.
Can extracted groundwater be discharged anywhere after treatment?
No. The discharge route and applicable permissions need to be established for the treated water.
Does a reduced concentration always mean remediation is finished?
Not necessarily. The agreed objectives, trends and potential for rebound or continued migration need review.
Does removing visible oil resolve groundwater contamination?
Not necessarily. Dissolved contamination or a continuing source may remain and needs assessment against the remediation objectives.
Why are groundwater monitoring wells installed at different locations or depths?
