Lead batteries under 16 06 01*

WM3 lists 16 06 01* for lead batteries as an absolute hazardous entry. A description such as vehicle battery does not distinguish every battery chemistry, so the battery type should be identified from accessible markings and manufacturer information where available.

The lead-battery code does not cover lithium batteries or other chemistries simply because they are stored or collected together. Mixed or unidentified batteries should remain described as such until the battery types are established.

Battery condition and safe identification

Intact, damaged and leaking batteries may need different collection arrangements, and contaminated packaging can itself become a separate waste. The List of Waste code identifies the battery entry; it does not set out a method for making a damaged battery safe or packaging it.

Use labels and manufacturer information that can be read without opening, dismantling or draining the battery. An active leak or immediate hazard remains subject to the site’s incident arrangements.

Recovery and associated wastes

Sending batteries for recovery or recycling does not remove the need to classify and describe them correctly. The carrier and receiving facility must be suitable for the battery type and its condition.

Leaked liquid, absorbents, damaged packaging or other residues from an incident may need their own waste descriptions. The battery code should not automatically be used for every contaminated material associated with the battery.

Identification and collection records

Useful records include the battery chemistry, number of units or approximate weight, manufacturer information where available and the condition of the batteries. Mixed chemistries or uncertainty should remain clear in the description presented to the receiving facility.
