Purpose of the waste code library

This library explains List of Waste entries and the classification points that commonly need to be considered with them. It is general reference information, not a site-specific waste classification, a receiving facility’s acceptance decision or an instruction to carry out hazardous work.

Editorial preparation and AI assistance

AI tools are used to assist with drafting and organising entries in this library. Before publication, the copy is edited and checked against the regulator and technical sources linked on the relevant pages. Identifiers, links and page structure are also checked. This is an AI-assisted editorial workflow; it is not independent sign-off by a named chemist, engineer or other technical specialist.

We do not invent qualifications, site visits, case studies, test results, equipment ownership or claims of specialist review. A technical contributor is only named when their identity, relevant expertise and review of the entry have been established.

Sources, dates and limitations

Where a source date is shown, it records when linked information was checked for an entry; it does not mean every cited document was issued on that date. Regulatory references apply only within their stated jurisdiction, and the linked source remains the authority for its own wording and scope.

A List of Waste code is selected from the activity and process that produced the waste. Mirror entries also require the relevant hazardous-property assessment. Waste classification, dangerous-goods transport classification and receiving-site acceptance are separate matters, so a code or test result should not be treated as deciding all three.

What we publish

Each detailed guide explains a particular waste entry, the evidence relevant to its classification and the limits of the source material. The wider reference index may link directly to the original source where no detailed guide is available. Search and filter pages are not separate editorial articles, and a reference entry does not confirm that a particular receiving facility will accept the waste.

Corrections and review

Factual corrections are checked against the relevant entry and a reliable supporting source before publication. Review dates change when a substantive correction or editorial review has taken place, not simply because a page has been rebuilt.

Unknown, mixed or unusually contaminated wastes may need additional competent assessment before they are classified or moved. Immediate hazards remain subject to the site’s emergency arrangements and the applicable health, safety and environmental controls.
